April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Established in 1970, the original intent of Earth Day was to bring the importance of protecting the Earth to the attention of the public, the media, and our elected officials. It resulted in rallies and protests from coast to coast that engaged more than 20 million Americans (more about that here)!

As we approach Earth Day 2020, we have not yet achieved all of the goals set forth by the originators of Earth Day, but we have not been idle either. Where government and media have failed us, our nonprofit organizations, in large part, have stepped up to be the leaders and activators behind enhancing and protecting the health of the planet. Environmentally-conscious individuals and businesses are often behind-the-scenes supporting these nonprofits through their donations of time, talent, and cash too.

Earth Day Oregon is an initiative to increase businesses’ and individuals’ support for our front-line nonprofit organizations who are daily working to create a better world.
